Hmm. My suggestion is to use CMS Made Simple and the cataloger and front end users (FEU) modules. That way the images can have data attached to each entry and they can be categorized by artist, genre, etc.
You can do this with WordPress too I just prefer CMSMS because of its user interface and because it's not as popular, it's not as attractive to hackers and script kiddies. Plus CMSMS is really easy to design for.

You could also use a gallery script such as Menalto Gallery 2, Plogger or Coppermine.

Not sounding pithy at all. They want a website for a group that already exists, they are papercrafter/artists and want their own "home" away from the yahoo group they already have.

At the risk of sounding pithy, there's already such a place, or places: behance.net<http://behance.net><http://behance.net> and dribbble.com<http://dribbble.com><http://dribbble.com>.
Is a client asking for this? What kind of art/artists?

I have been asked to create a website where artists can share their own
work, in one place. Does anyone have any ideas as to how BEST set this up?
