With metallic you can spray your fabric with silicon spray. It will not stain the fabric Not even stain satin. I have made a whole satin quilt with this method. You can buy this in a fabric store for $$$ or in Walmart automotive for $
Just a light spray will do of course in another room from your machine

Please don't panic already and understand I haven't made up my mind to close
the list already LOL

I can say one good thing has already come out of it, I usually have a TON of
emails that I have to moderate and delete (I have no moderator, it is just

I am so sorry to see this list go.  I have been here for a while now and try
my best to help when I can but most of the time when someone post a place it
is where I go and find things also.  I have been embroidering for quite some
time now and love to see new places but don't have much time to search that
I use to.  I love to have a place where I can go to find something that I
have but because I have sometimers.... (Sometimes I remember but more than
likely I don't) I am always trying to remember if I saw it or if I have
it...
Hope to see you stay.

[HatchedDesignForum] Re: Question about the African designs and puckers

I really appreciate the tips eveyone has sent to stop the puckers when embroidering. I didn't remember to use an embroidery needle and used a jeans needle when embroidering the African designs. I will try a cutaway next time, too. I used crystals for bling to draw the eye away from the puckers. One thing I am learning is how to compensate for the mistakes I have made.

Re: [HatchedDesignForum] Question about the African designs and puckers

Hi Ann,

I use Fairy Frost almost exclusively for my machine embroidery quilts. I do not
pre-wash, but I do use a fabric stabilizing product, such as Mary's Best Press,
before I begin stitching. This adds body to the Fairy Frost. I also embroider
with a 90/14 Sharp needle. I only use one layer of tear-away stabilizer, which
is in the hoop. If the design is extremely dense, like maybe 50,000 stitches or
so, then I will "float" the second piece of stabilizer under the hoop.

So, what you may have done "wrong" - two layers of stabilizer may have been too
much for the HIA designs. You may have stretched your fabric too tight when you
hooped it, so when you removed the hoop, the fabric relaxed and the puckers
showed up. I have also experimented with using a cutaway stabilizer, and I find
I get fewer puckers with it, as I'm not damaging the stitches as I "tear away"
the stabilizer.

Hope these hints help, and keep experimenting until you find the combination you
like. We all have done the same and there are just as many "right" ways to do
it, as there are machine embroiderers.

I am a newbie when it comes to embroidering. I embroidered the African designs
on Fairy Frost cotton fabric using 2 tear away stablizers and I had puckers
around the tops of the designs. I used two different designs and both had
puckers at the top. Could someone please tell me what I did wrong? I thought
using 2 tearaway sheets would have prevented this.

Have you ever noticed, also, that the quilt shop fabric tends to be a bit heavier weight than the Joanns or Walmart fabric?

Joann's fabric are a better quality than Walmart
but I still feel that the quality of your local quilt shop is far better
than either store.

------------------------------

Many years ago I was told that the less expensive stores would have the same fabric for less than in the quilt shops as the avccepted the first and last runs of the dyes. The explanation was that even though it was the same company and same looking fabric, the quilt shops got the middle, more perfect runs. But I have seen bad runs in quilt shops as well. It sometimes takes a while to compare fabrics. Fabric shopping should be given the same time and consideration as design and clothing shopping. Take your time, do some comparisons, and then do what you think is best for you. If I am making an heirloom quilt, etc., I usually do purchase the fabric at a quilt shop. But for charity or kids quilts, I am just as happy with JoAnns and other stores.
