This is the worst storm we have ever had except I think 1038 and I was not even
born then. BUT thanks you all for the prayer and thought support for all of us.
-----------------
I think you meant 1938, and I was 8 years old when that one hit. We were at my grandmother's house. We started home as the weather was getting bad, but suddenly the water was getting really deep in the streets and cars were getting stuck. We were lucky and got around it. But we did not know it was a hurricane. We had no warning systems then. By the time we got home, it was late, and my Mother put us both to bed. The wind was howling and we could hear that things were just not right outside, but we still did not know it was a hurricane. Remember, there was no such thing as television and weather reports then. Not even on the radio. The only news you were able to get was already several days old when you went to the local movie theater and watched "Movietone News". When we got out of bed in the morning, we had two boats in our backyard, (we lived roughly two blocks from the beach but there were no homes in between, it was a clear shot) huge oak trees were down, etc. I mean oak trees that were 75-100 feet tall, that were not even from our street straddling the roads. It was amazing that we had no damage to our house.
But No!!! The hurricane of 1938 was NOTHING like what the Northeast has just gone through. There was not as much flooding; not as much devastation and very few lives lost. It was more of an inconvenience. We didn't even lose power. Of course, sometime during the night, the water had to have come up into our backyard, but when we woke up all that remained were these big boats. It came and went that fast!
My heart goes out to those in the Northeast. I think they are probably going through worst than Andrew when it came through here, and that was bad. I don't think even Katrina was this bad.
Let me combine this story with a plea for help for the Red Cross. They are trying to get enough people and enough supplies, food, clothing, heating fuel, etc., to the disaster areas. They need all the help they can get with such a large area affected. Please! Sit down and write a check and send it today. These people are really suffering, and it is getting colder every day. They have no heat, no food, no water, none of the necessities that they need to go on living. Help the Red Cross get it to them. This is the time to open your hearts and give what you can. It could be you the next time! Remember, it is not just ordinary people, as if that wasn't enough. But there are the elderly and the little children that are going through this. Please, help to end as much of the suffering as possible.
