I guess I should clarify - my client is set up to take credit card payments
directly, but wants it to go straight through their bank instead of dealing
with a third party. They don't want to use paypal or any other online
service. I've got a call into the bank, but was hoping to get info from
someone who has actually set something like this up before. They are
currently set up with paypal on the old website, but would rather set the
new site up with a direct setup so that people don't have to sign up for an
account some place to be able to donate, but rather be able to give their
credit card information securely and have it processed directly from the
clients bank.
Thank you for the information here and the others that I've received. I am
making note of what is available and talking to the client about the best
way to proceed. I'll let you all know what I learn from the bank as well
once I talk with them.

Patricia
regarding taking online donations I suggest google checkout for merchants
(https://checkout.google.com/sell)- you can register a business or a
non-profit. Non-profits have the option of creating a donate button. You
link it to your bank account and can either have it go directly into the
account or sit in a pending status for review prior to the money being
processed. Its all within google so you don't need to see the credit card
details yourself.
I set it up for the Navy League at http://www.cjnlus.com if you want to see
an example of a donate process (about half way down the page on the right).
Feel free to donate to them :)
