[HatchedDesignForum] Christmas Eve at Walmart

I worked today from 1 pm until 8:45 pm. Walmart closed at 8 and it took
us only 45 minutes to run people out the door and do some housekeeping
before we headed out the door. I was standing out front of the store talking to
a few people before heading home. There was an armed sheriff outside the
doors at Walmart to help us close believe it or not and his job was
basically to tell people that Walmart had closed. It was kind of funny to watch
these people who would come up to the store and get upset because the store
was closed. One man, pushing his shopping cart he found in the parking
lot, almost drove it through the doors. The sheriff told him the store was
closed and he apparently wasn't paying attention but finally got the clue
when the door wouldn't open. So then he went to the EXIT door where the
employees were leaving from. But finally realized that yes, Walmart had indeed
closed!

I was standing next to a woman and we started to talk. I asked her if she
was waiting for a ride because she had been standing out there for a
while. I don't know how long she had been there before I got out there but she
was getting a little stressed. From what I was able to gather, he son
driving her car, dropped her off a Walmart to do some last minute shopping.
She was desperately trying to get in touch with him to come pick her up but
he wasn't answering his phone. I finally asked her if she needed a ride and
she said probably. One problem is that she really didn't know where she
was going. She was from Atlanta here visiting. OK this was funny to me
because after almost 4 years here (since this is my 3rd Christmas) I still
don't really know my way around well! She told me she was staying at a hotel
near Haywood Mall but she wasn't exactly sure which hotel it was LOL I
really feel for her, I've traveled a bit and it's hard to keep track of where
you are at times! We headed over towards Haywood Mall, it was only a few
miles from Walmart and she saw the sign for Clarion Hotels. We drove
around the parking lot and didn't see her car anywhere. Her son finally called
her and they had a conversation about where he was.

While we were waiting for him to get back there, she and I sat in my car
and whipped out the cell phones and shared pictures we had LOL It was
really nice. She was still stressing over where he son was and I totally
understand how she felt. He finally showed up and when we got out of the car, I
popped the trunk of my car and grabbed a bottle of bubbly. I had bought 4
earlier tonight and a bag of ice so the bubbly was nice and cold (it
wasn't French, so don't worry, I really didn't blow my children's inheritance on
it). I grabbed a bottle and handed it to her and told her Merry
Christmas! She cried and so did I. Her son didn't understand why she was upset. I
told him she was feeling a little stranded was all. She gave me a hug and
I headed back home.

Point being... I spend a good part of the day feeling sorry for myself
for a whole laundry list of things but I really felt her sorrow over how her
son was treating her. I've had issues with my boys over the years and some
of you probably remember. Anyway, it was awesome to bring a little joy
into her night. I know how she felt... She said she's going to be back in
town in a couple of weeks and she was going to look me up. I hope she does,
I think I'll take her to dinner :)

I hope you all found your little bit of peace this evening. I know I did.
And yes, for the record, I did pop a cork here at the house as well :)
Nothing like a little bubbly to improve your attitude!

I wish you all happiness and joy for Christmas. I hope that your home is
as warm as your heart. I hope that your friends and family bring you great
joy. For those of us who will be spending Christmas alone, or in my case,
with my dog, I have very special wishes for you... I raise my glass to you
and toast you for your courage to get through the holidays in one piece!
It's not easy nor is it fun. Find someone, anyone, and bring a little
sunshine into their day tomorrow. You just don't know how good you're going to
feel...

Merry Christmas to all 8,000 of my very special friends!
