Michael,

John has it right. A user cannot alter or modify your content or your page. They may be able to download your images and/or copy your text, alter them on their own system, but the will never be able to upload the altered content to your site. To do that, they would need to know YOUR log in and YOUR password to the hosting site of your web pages.

No matter how you develop your website data - such as creating it locally on your system and using FTP or using a hosting company's templates - without knowledge of your user ID and password, there is no way that somebody can alter your pages as published.

Think of it this way. If, instead of a web page, you had your products you sell in a printed catalog. Nobody could take a copy of your catalog, alter the images or the text and put that catalog back out. Mind you, in this example, sure, they could then go through the cost and hassle of re-typesetting your catalog and re-publishing your catalog, but nobody is going to do that.

Again, without knowledge of your log-in credential to your hosting site, there is no way to alter your web pages once they have been published.

If you don't believe us, try it. See if you can copy a website onto your local system and then upload it back to the domain and the hosting site. It's not possible.

Re: [web-design] Re: Opening word as a webpage?

Hi, Garry!

As others have stated, Word and FrontPage will convert documents to
HTML. However, there are several things to consider here:

- FrontPage has been discontinued and replaced with an entirely
different and more current program called Expression Web. The most
recent version of FrontPage was released 8 years ago, and the webpages
is creates are designed to render properly only in Internet Explorer
5.5 (although code can be manually modified to improve compatibility
with later browsers). Since Internet Explorer 10 will be released this
year (not to mention that more than half of Web users no longer use
Internet Explorer at all), you're almost guaranteed to run into
display issues when people visit your webpage if you don't
sufficiently edit the converted HTML file.

- Word is a document publishing program, not a Web authoring program.
My friend Rob, when someone suggested converting Word documents to
HTML, suggested that the next step in that logic would be to point a
video camera to the computer screen and make a TV commercial; you
could do it, and it may work, but it's far from the best strategy,
because that's not what the program is designed for. HTML conversion
was an afterthought.

- Word has its own XML subset called VML that it interjects in many
places in HTML documents as soon as you edit them in Word. Since VML
is not currently supported by any modern browser, you may spend a lot
of time trying to learn a language that no longer has any practical
use. (Actually, Adobe Dreamweaver, the industry standard Web
publishing program, has a command specifically designed to clean up
Word's HTML and remove all VML; that tool got one of my converted Word
files down from over 600KB down to 60KB, though I was able to bring it
down to 28KB with some manual editing.)

My suggestion to you would be to find a good book, website, video
tutorial, or tutor to guide your HTML education, leaving Word out of
it. I'm not saying this as a criticism, but as a tip, coming from a
fellow Web designer who has experienced the same frustrations you are
facing now. If you're not inclined to purchase expensive software, use
simple free programs that let you edit the markup rather than editing
it themselves, like Notepad or gVim. Start with simple files and work
your way upwards. Then take on CSS. That's my suggestion, anyway.

Hope this helps!

[HatchedDesignForum] New Year's Eve Change

Realizing that the time for the AEC Early Bird Special falls on New Year's Eve, and that many are away for the Holiday, I have changed the final date to come in under the lesser Registration Fee to January 7th, which is a one week extension. Sorry I didn't realize this sooner, but this will give you extra time in the event that you have been out of town for the Holidays.

I am also hoping to have the rest of the Class Descriptions, including Urban Zundt's, posted to the website by that time. I am just waiting until they arrive. It seems almost everyone is running a little late this year.

I also want to let you know that we will have a record number of embroidery/serger/sewing machines this year, for a total of 125!!!!! It will not be necessary for anyone to lug their machines to the AEC Conference. This is one of our advantages. Looking forward to seeing you there!!!!

Re: [web-design] Opening word as a webpage?

You can't open it as a web page as long as it has the .doc or .docx file extension.  You can hyperlink to it from a web page but that still opens it as Word.
