The CLIENT (your prospective client that is) should be the one taking care of getting login credentials to you. You should have backend/dashboard/cpanel access to the site so that you can work with database files, and FTP access so that you can upload and download files to the site.

Is the best way to approach this is to have the hosting company give me access to the code so i can make changes? I also feel that this web host isnt a good one - anyone able to recommend one that will allow us to accomplish this?? many thanks for the help -- Mike
