[HatchedDesignForum] Re: WalMart

A few years ago I took a two day class with Harriett Hargraves. She is very well known quilter and fabric designer. During this class, she told us that when a manufacturer is ready to start a new line of fabric the designer is there on on site. The first run takes about 100 yards from the beginning of the run until it appears on the finish line. This is done on a very low count cotton fabric. If the colors do not meet the designers eye they adjust and do another run. So there is 100 yards that gets bolted ( a bolt is 15 to 25 yards) and goes into a warehouse. They do another run on the same kind of fabric...if the designer says yes (another 100 yards bolted and stored) and if it is a definite yes then they use the good cotton...which is bolted and sent out to the quilt shops after market. Meanwhile they are taking very careful notes on what has been done. After they run all the fabric that will be sold to QS's, the put the cheaper fabric back on and run the same design to go to Joanne's, WalMart, Hobby Lobby and whoever. All of this is stored and the companies bid on what they want. If it becomes a good seller for the lower end stores, the manufactures has the notes on the fabrics and reruns it for them for a limited number of years.

Anyway that is what H Hargraves told us....
